Fulbright: advising in support of cultural exchanges between U.S. and Italy, November 9, 2007
(Interview with Isabella Lanciotti)
“Our future is not in the stars but in our own minds and hearts....” An emblematic thought of J.William Fulbright, founder of the most important cultural exchange program in the world. In fact, thanks to the scholarships assigned by the program, every year hundreds of students, researchers and teachers all over the world can share their ideas and their culture with the United States.
What is the aim of the Fulbright scholarships managed by the Fulbright Commission in Italy?
To promote chances of study, research and teaching in Italy and USA.
What kind of help does an Educational Advisor offer and how many advisors are there in Italy?
To offer personal advising about competitions of the Fulbright program and about all the opportunities of study and research in the United States. An informative brochure about Fulbright scholarships and a guide for study in the U.S. are available on the Commission website: www.fulbright.it
A customized advice, available by phone, e-mail or appointment, enables to deepen information about many issues and to fill in applications to Fulbright scholarships, with a lot of useful features about choosing university in the various fields of study.
We also organize meetings in universities Italy-wide (a list of the meetings is available on internet). The information service is available in the main office of Fulbright Commission in Rome and at the American Consulates in Milan and Naples and at the Consular Agency in Palermo. All the advisors are coordinated by the main office in Rome.
How many scholarships are assigned every year?
Approximately 120 scholarships are assigned every year in almost all areas of study and are equally divided between the two countries. Furthermore, on occasion of Fulbright’s 60 th anniversary have been established two new scholarships for research: the first, assigned to an American researcher, in business management jointly sponsored by the LUISS Guido Carli (Free International University for Social Studies) and the University of Calabria, and the second, assigned to an Italian researcher, in contemporary arts at a university in the U.S.
Finmeccanica recently committed $ 80,000 to set up a new scholarship for a two-year Master’s program for research in science and technology.
Commission’s activity is not confined to promoting and assigning scholarships, but also includes assistance throughout the duration of the program.
