NEW YEAR’S SAFETY, DECEMBER 30, 2008
As the New Year approaches, American citizens are reminded to be especially careful during the festivities. Be aware of your surroundings and make intelligent decisions about where you're going, how you're going, and who you're going with. If you are moving around town, remember that the police have increased alcohol checkpoints during the holidays. Even if you are cold sober, you need to be cautious of other drivers or revelers who may not be.
Rome is famous for its fireworks, not only for its official displays, but also for lots of individuals shooting off individual fireworks throughout the night. Be careful walking around and watch for falling fireworks. One of the old New Year’s Eve traditions includes throwing things out the window at midnight -- throwing out the old to make way for the new.
If you're going out, even for a short time, leave a few lights on and a radio or TV to make your apartment look occupied. Double-check that your windows and grilles are locked. New Year's Eve has historically been prime time for burglars in the city.
