DEMONSTRATION NOTICE: PLANNED DEMONSTRATIONS SCHEDULED ON OCT. 17, 2009 AND NEXT WEEK IN ROME

Please be advised that on this weekend and potentially into next week, labor-related groups will march through Via V. Veneto to Via Molise to the Ministry for Economic Development in Rome. The number of people has not been confirmed.

On Saturday, October 17, starting at approximately 14:00, there will be a large demonstration against racism. About 50,000 people are scheduled to march from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza Bocca della Verita, which means they will move through the major streets in the center of Rome. Police have advised that demonstrators from the No Dal Molin movement, usually located in Vicenza, will join the anti-racism demonstration. Police will provide reinforcements outside the American Embassy in Rome as a precaution.

On Saturday October 17, starting at 18:00, approximately 3,000 people will conduct a silent march commemorating the anniversary of the Shoah. The group will march from Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere to the Synagogue of Rome located on Lungotevere dei Cenci.

The U.S. Embassy strongly recommends that U.S. citizens be especially attentive and alert when in large crowds.
