Demonstration Notice: Demonstration Scheduled in Rome on Saturday, October 3, 2009

The U.S. Embassy  recommends that U.S. citizens be especially attentive and alert in Rome this weekend. Three large events are planned for Saturday afternoon, October 3, in locations that U.S. citizens often visit.

At around 1500, there will be a march from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza del Popolo, passing by Piazza Barberini. This march will be conducted by some employees of the school system.

From 1600 to 1930 members of the press will hold a static demonstration Saturday afternoon in Piazza del Popolo. The organizers are expecting 50,000 participants to support freedom of the press.

Students and school employees are conducting a march starting at Piazza Esquilino to Viale Trastevere, the site of the Ministry of Education.  This march will go past Santa Maria Maggiore and La Bocca della Verita'.  (Exact start time was not determined as of this writing.)

While none of these activities are directed at or against U.S. interests, the U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens avoid these areas.
