Demonstration Notice: Demonstrations in Rome – February 13 & 14, 2009

On Friday, February 13, there will be a general strike and demonstrations by various unions starting from three different points in Rome: Piazza della Repubblica, Piazzale Ostiense, and Piazza Tiburtina. These three demonstrations will be collectively ending at Piazza San Giovanni. The organizers are expecting large numbers of participants.

On Saturday, February 14, there will be a demonstration in the afternoon starting from Piazza della Repubblica going on to Campo dei Fiori. This demonstration is being sponsored by political groups affiliated with Centri Sociali.

The routes for these two demonstrations have been steered away from any of the locations where the G7 ministerial meetings will be taking place on the 13th and 14th. Due to the U.S. Embassy’s close proximity to some of these activities, additional security support will be seen on these days. Despite the large police presence, the Embassy has been told by police officials that there will likely not be any road closures.

American citizens should consider avoiding areas where protesters will be gathering.
