Demonstration Notice: Update on Demonstrations Planned in Rome for Saturday, January 17, 2009
- The major demonstration in Rome that will converge on the Coliseum is sponsored by the Palestine Forum. The demonstration will take place from 15:30, until its conclusion, which is unspecified at this time. The march starts at Piazza Vittorio, then on to Via Cavour, Fori Imperiali, and ends at the Coliseum. Large groups may gather at bus stops or metro stops as they prepare to join the demonstration. Reports indicate that this demonstration may draw as many as 10,000 participants.
- On Saturday, January 17, starting at 14:00, Amnesty International is sponsoring a demonstration in Rome calling for the closure of the Guantanamo detention facility. The demonstration will move from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza Barberini. The organizers anticipate approximately 500 participants.
- On Saturday, January 17, in the afternoon (time unspecified), some right-wing parties are demonstrating in Piazza San Marco against the transient camps in Rome. Organizers expect about 200 participants.
American citizens should consider carefully planning their movements around Rome on Saturday. Be mindful of your surroundings and stay alert for large crowds or people focusing unwanted attention on you. You should consider avoiding the routes to these demonstration gathering places.
