Demonstration Notice: Possibility of Demonstrations in Italy Regarding Gaza Conflict January 7, 2009

Please be advised that on January 7, the local police increased their presence at strategic locations around the City of Rome in case of spontaneous demonstrations protesting Israeli actions in Gaza. Since flash demonstrations are conducted without permits, the police may have little advance warning about the target of a specific demonstration.

Please be aware that news media have reported that actions protesting the Gaza conflict in other countries have taken on an anti-American, anti-Israeli, and anti-Jewish character.

Please review your personal security procedures, and pass along this information to your family members or others traveling with you. For a quick refresher, see Security Tips.

At a minimum, while the situation in Gaza continues to develop, avoid large crowds. If you see a crowd start to form near you, leave the area. Do whatever is necessary to move to a position of greater safety. Be careful about doing things that draw attention to you as an American. Keep your voice down when you’re speaking English in the presence of strangers.

If you observe activities such as demonstrations developing, please notify the local police authorities.
