Upcoming Demonstrations in Rome This Weekend and Next Week

The U.S. Embassy in Rome recommends that you keep these events in mind while you are exploring Rome over the weekend and next week.

Tomorrow, Nov. 19, 2009 , a small group from Movimento Sociale Fiamme Tricolore will be handing out pamphlets from 1:00pm  to 5:00pm in Piazza del Popolo.

Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, a labor group will be protesting outside the Hotel Palace and the BNL Bank on  Via Veneto from 10::00am  to 3:00pm – the number of persons was not confirmed.

Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 approximately  30.000 people will demonstrate from 9:00am to 2:00pm from Piazza Bocca della Verita’ to Piazza Navona regarding cuts in education. 

Also Saturday,  at 2:00pm 3:00pm people will participate in  Violence Against Women march,  from Piazza della Repubblica to San Giovanni.

Another 1000 people will march from Piazza Vittorio to Piazza Farnese in support of Violence Against Women.

Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 a religious processions will take place between 9:30am – 5:00pm from Piazza San Giovanni to the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli – number of participants was not confirmed.

Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 approximately 100 agricultural workers will demonstrate on Via XX Settembre from 9:00am – 1:30pm   

DEMONSTRATION NOTICE: DEMONSTRATIONS AND STRIKES IN ROME - OCTOBER & NOVEMBER, 2009

The following is some useful information about upcoming demonstrations and strikes:

This week in Piazza Barberini, there will be a static demonstration every day from 10:00am to 7:00pm, with up to 70 people participating. The demonstration relates to Italian companies which have been affected by the current economy.

Note that from November 9th to 13th, the same group will move the demonstration to Piazza del Popolo, again expecting about 50-70 people.

This Friday, October 23rd, the Cobas (non-official Unions) are planning demonstrations from 9:00am to 2:00pm, starting in Piazza della Repubblica and ending in Piazza San Giovanni. Approximately 10,000 people are expected to attend.

Also this Friday, Oct. 23rd, there will be a general public transportation strike in effect from 8:30am - 5:00pm. Schools reportedly will be closed. Plan your travel carefully since you may have to make alternate arrangements.

On Saturday, October 24th, a group of approximately 1,000 supporters of the Tibetan people will march from Piazza Bocca della Verita to Piazza Navona from 2:00pm - 6:00pm.

The U.S Embassy in Rome recommends that U.S. citizens exercise caution when traveling in the vicinity of these events, and that you plan ahead for the general transportation strike.
